what is autism?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects how people experience and interact with the world. It can influence communication, social interaction, sensory processing, emotional regulation, routines, and the way information is understood and processed.

Autism presents differently in every individual. Some autistic people may seek routine and predictability, while others experience sensory sensitivities, differences in communication, or find social situations particularly demanding. Many autistic people also have unique strengths, interests, creativity, and ways of thinking that are an important part of who they are.

Autism is often misunderstood, particularly in women and girls, who may develop masking strategies to hide or compensate for their differences. As a result, many autistic people are not recognised until adolescence or adulthood, after years of feeling different or misunderstood.

For both children and adults, autism can impact everyday life in different ways. This might include navigating friendships and relationships, managing sensory environments, coping with change, regulating emotions, or recovering from the demands of daily life. Without the right understanding and support, these experiences can contribute to anxiety, burnout, and low self-esteem.

At Bold Minds ND, we take a neuro-affirming approach to Autism. Rather than focusing on deficits, we help individuals and families understand how their autistic brain works, recognise strengths, and develop practical strategies that support wellbeing at home, in education, in the workplace, and in everyday life.

Whether you have an Autism diagnosis, are considering an Autism assessment, or simply want to better understand yourself or your child, support can begin at any stage of the journey.

support with or without a diagnosis

Many people assume they need a formal Autism diagnosis before they can access support. In reality, understanding and support can begin long before an assessment takes place.

Whether you're exploring the possibility of Autism, waiting for an Autism assessment, recently diagnosed, or simply trying to make sense of your experiences, support can help you better understand how your brain works and what strategies may be beneficial.

At Bold Minds ND, we support autistic children, adults, and families by helping them navigate challenges commonly associated with Autism, including:

Emotional regulation and overwhelm
• Sensory processing and sensory needs
• Communication and social interaction
Managing change and uncertainty
• Burnout and energy management
• School, college, and workplace support
• Self-esteem, confidence, and identity
• Understanding strengths and support needs

Our approach is always neuro-affirming and tailored to the individual. Rather than focusing on "fixing" behaviours, we help people understand their needs, build on their strengths, and develop practical strategies that work in everyday life.

For some people, support is a stepping stone towards an Autism assessment. For others, it provides the understanding and guidance they need without pursuing a formal Autism diagnosis.

Wherever you are on your journey, you don't have to wait for an Autism diagnosis to start understanding yourself or your child.
