what is audhd?

AuDHD is the term commonly used to describe someone who is both autistic and has ADHD. Whilst Autism and ADHD are separate neurodevelopmental differences, many people experience traits of both. Having a combined Autism and ADHD profile creates a unique experience that is more than simply adding the two diagnoses together.

AuDHD presents differently in every individual. Some people may crave routine whilst simultaneously seeking novelty, experience sensory sensitivities alongside impulsivity, or find themselves wanting structure but struggling to maintain it. Many people describe feeling as though their Autism and ADHD traits are constantly pulling them in different directions.

AuDHD is often overlooked, particularly in women and girls who may develop masking strategies that hide or compensate for their differences. As awareness has grown, many adults are now receiving a combined Autism and ADHD diagnosis later in life, helping them make sense of experiences that previously felt confusing or misunderstood.

For both children and adults, AuDHD can influence communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation, executive functioning, relationships, education, work, and everyday life. Without the right understanding and support, these experiences can contribute to anxiety, burnout, low self-esteem, and chronic overwhelm.

At Bold Minds ND, we take a neuro-affirming approach to AuDHD. Rather than focusing on deficits, we help individuals and families understand how Autism and ADHD interact, recognise strengths, and develop practical strategies that support wellbeing at home, in education, in the workplace, and throughout everyday life.

Whether you have an AuDHD diagnosis, are considering a combined Autism and ADHD assessment, or simply want to better understand yourself or your child, support can begin at any stage of the journey.

support with or without a diagnosis

Many people assume they need a formal AuDHD diagnosis before they can access support. In reality, understanding and support can begin long before an assessment takes place.

Whether you're exploring the possibility of AuDHD, waiting for a combined Autism and ADHD assessment, recently diagnosed, or simply trying to make sense of your experiences, support can help you better understand how your brain works and what strategies may be beneficial.

At Bold Minds ND, we support AuDHD children, adults, and families by helping them navigate the unique experiences that come with both Autism and ADHD, including:

• Emotional regulation and overwhelm
• Sensory processing and sensory needs
• Executive functioning, organisation, and planning
• Communication and social interaction
• Managing routines, change, and uncertainty
• Burnout and energy management
• School, college, and workplace support
• Self-esteem, identity, and understanding strengths

Our approach is always neuro-affirming and tailored to the individual. Rather than focusing on "fixing" behaviours, we help people understand how their Autism and ADHD interact, recognise their strengths, and develop practical strategies that support everyday life.

For some people, support is a stepping stone towards a combined Autism and ADHD assessment. For others, it provides the understanding and guidance they need without pursuing a formal AuDHD diagnosis.

Wherever you are on your journey, you don't have to wait for an AuDHD diagnosis to start understanding yourself or your child.
